Apartment 

 

A private client set a unique brief requesting collaboration between architect, photographer and industrial designer, to refurbish an Art deco apartment overlooking High Street Kensington. The brief was to create a modern city apartment, that allowed for family living, entertainment and the display of artwork and photography.

 

The arrangement of the flat was addressed, with the communal areas located on the street front, and bedrooms wrapping the private courtyard at the rear. This allowed for the open plan living and entertainment space to stretch the full frontage of the property. The entrance opens to a white gallery-like hallway, where art can be displayed and appreciated. This creates a silent progression through the apartment which culminates with the light filled living areas. This threshold is emphasised by an angled black timber wall.

 

The material palette is muted, allowing the artwork to create animation in the space, while also acknowledging the context of the art deco building. Whitewashed walls are offset with black stained timber paneling to delineate points of interaction with the user. The kitchen and door paneling all mark this interface, with the black timber angled wall also disguising two hidden access doors.
